Is it Artificial or Augmented Intelligence?

As the world embraces the wonderful possibilities of Artificial Intelligence, there are concerns of naysayers, asking mankind to tread the path with care. As part of my consultancy engagements with a multitude of clients from different walks of life, across industry sectors and geographies, I have seen a mixed bag of responses within the teams.   Some feel threatened, some excited, as the change begins to take shape.   Yet many -a- times when we steer the discussion to how Artificial Intelligence is going to Augment rather than replace mankind, the discussions suddenly open up for ideas and acceptance. As per What is, ( https://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/augmented-intelligence ), Augmented intelligence is an alternative conceptualization of  artificial intelligence  that focuses on AI's assistive role, emphasizing the fact that cognitive technology is designed to enhance human intelligence rather than replace it. The choice of the word augmented, ...

Politics in AI

Introducing AI: What’s new? What’s different this time? Artificial Intelligence is the new buzzword. Any moderately aware person of our times has basic idea about what AI is. Still, as a refresher, AI is an emerging discipline that attempts to create machines who can replicate human-like thinking. Till the advent of AI, human beings did boast of at least one thing that is exclusive to humans i.e. intelligence. This is the basic thing that is being redefined by AI. To start with, it is important to understand the difference between Automation and AI. Automation is replication of some action for which rules are fed into the system. The machine doesn’t actually apply its “own mind”. On the other hand, AI is an innovation in which the machine “learns as it works”. The machine collects information, processes it and produces results. Now, this result is fed back into the system and adds to the learning/wisdom of the machine. When new data is added, the machine “reflects back” on the previ...

How Globotics changing our world!

Humanity is at a crossroads, we face both the opportunities and challenges of a range of powerful and emerging technologies that will drive radical shifts in the way we live. The accelerated pace at which technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, robotics, automation, advanced materials and quantum computing are developing, is already transforming the systems that we take for granted today. From how we produce and transport goods and services to the way we communicate, collaborate or even elect our governments, rapid technological change—which often happens at an exponential pace—is reshaping how we experience the world around us. One of the biggest challenge to keeping on top of emerging technology is that the pace of change is too fast. Changes can be made, and they are worth the short-term distraction today to make a real difference going into tomorrow. Richard Baldwin in his new book ‘The Globotics upheaval – Globalisation, robotics and the future of work’,...
